How ChatGPT Chooses Which Websites to Cite (and How to Test It)

Many companies assume being mentioned by ChatGPT is luck. In practice, citations follow patterns — and they can be tested.

This article covers three research findings and a testing method you can run tonight.

When does ChatGPT search the web?

ChatGPT does not always search. It triggers web search when a question needs current information or specific sources, such as "which companies in Hong Kong do GEO".

Observation: the first user turn triggers searches most often; follow-ups rarely do. So the position you are competing for is in the first answer.

Three research findings

1. 44.2% of citations come from the first 30% of content

In February 2026 Kevin Indig analysed 1.2 million AI answers and 18,012 verified citations: 44.2% came from the first 30%, 31.1% from the middle, and only 24.7% from the last third — declining towards the footer.

2. 78.4% of question citations come from headings

AI treats an H2 as the question and the paragraph below as the answer, so "How much does GEO cost?" outperforms "Service fees".

3. Definitive language is cited almost twice as often

Phrasing such as "X is", "X refers to" or "X includes" was nearly twice as likely to be cited. Vague hedging is hard for a model to reuse.

Five things that get you cited

  • Define the topic in the first paragraph — no long build-up
  • Answer within 80–150 words under each H2
  • Use concrete numbers, years and locations ("March 2026", "Hong Kong", "six to nine months")
  • Include the full company name, address and phone so the entity is unambiguous
  • Serve main content in HTML, not injected later by JavaScript

A 30-prompt testing method

Do not rely on impressions. Run a fixed set of 30 real customer questions every month in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and log the results.

  • 10 service queries: "which companies in Hong Kong do GEO?"
  • 10 comparison queries: "GEO vs SEO difference"
  • 10 decision queries: "how much does GEO cost, is it worth it?"
  • Log: mentioned or not, position, whether a link is shown, which competitors appear

FAQ

Can I pay for placement in ChatGPT?

There is no paid placement in citations. Inclusion depends on content and credibility.

Is English content cited more often?

It depends on the query language. Chinese questions tend to surface Chinese content, so publish both.

Can a new site get cited?

Yes. Ahrefs found about 31% of cited pages rank outside the top 100, so being new or small is not disqualifying — citability is what matters.

Does being cited create business?

It tends to produce branded searches and direct enquiries, usually with a lag. Track branded search volume and enquiry sources together.
