How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and AI Search

A client once asked: "I asked ChatGPT who offers this service. It named several companies, but not us."
The reason is rarely mysterious. AI search and AI assistants build answers from content on public pages. If your site does not state something clearly, there is nothing to cite.
These are the five steps we actually follow on our own site. No special "AI optimisation" tricks required.
Step 1: write what only you can write
An AI can already explain what digital transformation is. What it cannot invent is your experience: which clients you served, what went wrong, how you fixed it.
If your page restates what everyone else has already said, there is no reason for a model to cite you.
Step 2: one question per page, one clear answer
Answer the question in the first couple of sentences instead of opening with three paragraphs of background. Clearer answers are easier to quote.
Step 3: structure with headings and lists
- Use H2 and H3 to make each section obvious.
- Write steps, conditions and comparisons as lists.
- State key figures and conclusions in full sentences, not with pronouns or "as mentioned above".
Step 4: use structured data, but do not rely on it alone
Structured data such as Organization, Article and FAQPage helps, but it is not magic. Being crawlable and eligible for snippets matters far more.
Step 5: watch the data and keep updating
Use search platform data and server logs to see which pages are crawled and referenced. When a question keeps appearing, write a page that answers it directly.
What you do not need to do
You do not need to rewrite content for AI, and you do not need to slice articles into fragments. Google states plainly that neither is required.
