Cybersecurity Basics: 5 Things Every Business Should Do Today

Thing 4: Look carefully at emails before you click

The most common attack is "phishing" — hackers pretend to be your bank, the government, or your supplier, tricking you into clicking a link or giving a password.

• When an email tells you to "log in now", "submit your details", or "transfer money", ask yourself before acting:
• Is the sender address really that company? (Check the full email address, not just the display name)
• Hover over the link — is it going to a strange URL?
• Are they rushing you, demanding you act immediately?
• If in doubt, do not click. Call the company directly and confirm.
